The Jumolhari Base Camp Trek is one of Bhutan’s most popular and scenic treks, offering spectacular views of the sacred Mount Jumolhari (7,314m), also known as the “Mountain of the Goddess.” This moderately challenging trek takes you through pristine forests, high-altitude meadows, remote villages, and offers an unforgettable experience of Bhutan’s untouched wilderness and rich cultural heritage.

Detailed Itinerary
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our representative. Transfer to your hotel and rest after your flight. In the afternoon, visit the iconic Paro Rinpung Dzong and stroll across the traditional cantilever bridge. Evening orientation about the upcoming trek. Overnight in Paro.
Today is crucial for acclimatization before the trek. Hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), one of Bhutan’s most sacred sites, perched 900m above the Paro valley. The hike takes approximately 5-6 hours round trip and serves as excellent preparation for the trek ahead. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Overnight in Paro.
Morning visit to the National Museum (Ta Dzong) showcasing Bhutanese art, artifacts, and natural history. Explore Paro town and local markets. Afternoon equipment check and final trek preparations. Meet your trekking crew and receive briefing about the trek. Early dinner and rest. Overnight in Paro.
Drive to Drukgyel Dzong (30 minutes), the starting point of the trek. Begin trekking along the Paro Chhu (river) through beautiful pine and oak forests. Pass through small settlements and terraced farmlands. The trail is relatively gentle, allowing for gradual acclimatization. Trek duration: 5-6 hours. Overnight in camp.
Continue following the Paro Chhu upstream through dense forests of rhododendron, pine, and juniper. The trail gradually climbs with several stream crossings. Pass by the army post at Gunitsawa. Beautiful views of waterfalls and mountain landscapes. Trek duration: 6-7 hours. Overnight in camp.
Today’s trek takes you through alpine meadows and yak pastures. The landscape opens up dramatically with stunning views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. Pass through the settlement of Soe with traditional stone houses. Arrive at Jangothang, the base camp of Mount Jumolhari, with breathtaking mountain vistas. Trek duration: 5-6 hours. Overnight in camp.
Rest day at Jumolhari Base Camp for acclimatization and exploration. Optional day hikes include:
- Hike to Tshophu Lake for spectacular reflections of Jumolhari
- Explore nearby ridges for panoramic mountain views
- Visit local yak herder camps and learn about their traditional lifestyle
- Photography and wildlife spotting opportunities Overnight in camp.
Trek Ends TREK ENDS Begin the return journey, retracing your steps through the beautiful Paro valley. Descend through alpine meadows and forests with different perspectives of the landscape. The downhill trek offers a more relaxed pace to enjoy the surroundings. Trek duration: 6-7 hours. Meet vehicles at the endpoint and drive to Thimphu (3 hours). Check into hotel. Celebration dinner. Overnight in Thimphu.
